The Cloudflare startup program gives young companies $10k, $100k or up to $350k in credits for one year. Here's who qualifies, what the credits cover and skip, how far the money really goes on Workers, R2 and Workers AI, how to apply and what happens when the year ends.

The Cloudflare startup program, officially called Cloudflare for Startups, gives young tech companies $10k, $100k or up to $350k in credits to spend on Cloudflare's developer platform for one year. It also adds Enterprise-grade security and CDN features to three of your domains at no cost.

That's a strong offer. But the headline number hides product caps, a funding rule that decides your tier and a card on file that gets billed the day the year ends. This guide covers who qualifies for the Cloudflare startup program, what the credits really buy and how to apply without wasting the one shot you get.

Key Takeaways

  • The Cloudflare startup program has three tiers: $10k for bootstrapped startups, $100k and up to $350k for startups backed by an affiliated partner.
  • Credits last one year or until they run out, and Cloudflare says it isn't approving extensions right now.
  • R2 is capped at $10,000 and Workers AI at $2,500 to $50,000 by tier, while AI Gateway and domain registration aren't covered at all.
  • You need a live website, a business email, a tech product and funding up to Series B, and you can only join once.
  • By our math, most early startups will struggle to spend $10k on Workers alone, so the real value is in AI, storage and the Enterprise plan features.

What Is the Cloudflare Startup Program?

It's a credit and support package for early-stage tech companies. Cloudflare calls it Cloudflare for Startups, and the goal is simple: get you building on Workers, R2 and the rest of its developer platform while you're small, so you stay when you grow.

You get two kinds of value. The first is credits for usage-based products, such as compute, storage and AI. The second is a set of plan upgrades that cost nothing, including Enterprise features on three domains and unlimited Pro and Business plans.

Support grows with your tier. Every member gets priority tickets and chat, and the top tier adds an account manager and office hours with Cloudflare's solution architects every two weeks.

The program is separate from Workers Launchpad, Cloudflare's cohort program that connects startups building on Workers with venture capital partners. You can learn about both, but this guide covers the credits.

How Much Credit Does the Cloudflare Startup Program Give?

Between $10k and $350k, depending on how much you've raised and from whom. The tiers were raised recently: the entry tier went from $5,000 to $10,000, and the top tier went from $250,000 to $350,000, Cloudflare's FAQ says.

TierCreditsWho it's forExtra support
Tier 3$10kBootstrapped or self-funded, under $1M raisedCommunity, events, docs and Discord
Tier 2$100kUnder $5M raised, funded by an affiliated partnerTechnical sessions, account manager in some cases
Tier 1Up to $350k$5M or more raised, funded by an affiliated partnerAccount manager, priority support, office hours every two weeks

Note the words "up to." Cloudflare describes these as maximum amounts, so your approval email is the only number that counts.

The phrase "affiliated partner" matters most. It means a venture firm, accelerator or other investor that works with Cloudflare. If your investor isn't on that list, expect Tier 3, even with real funding, and ask your investor or the startup team before you apply.

Who Qualifies for the Cloudflare Startup Program?

Cloudflare lists seven rules, and you must meet all of them:

  • Age: your company was incorporated no more than 10 years ago.
  • Funding: you're funded up to Series B, with funding in the last 12 months.
  • Product: you're actively building a technology product.
  • Website: you have a live website that anyone can check.
  • Social proof: you're active on LinkedIn, X or GitHub.
  • First time: you haven't been in the program before.
  • Business email: you apply as a for-profit company, using an email on your own domain rather than Gmail or Outlook.

Most teams fail on the email or the website, not the funding. One rule is unclear, though. The funding line mentions the last 12 months, yet Tier 3 is meant for bootstrapped teams with no outside money. We read that as the funding rule applying to Tiers 1 and 2, but Cloudflare doesn't say so, and a short email to startups@cloudflare.com will settle it.

Who Is Not a Good Fit?

Service businesses, mostly. Cloudflare says schools, personal blogs, consultancies, agencies, managed service providers and resellers don't fit the program.

That rules out a lot of small firms that build for clients. If you run an agency, the program is for your clients' startups, not for you.

Government and civic projects have other options. Cloudflare points them to the Athenian Project, which protects election websites, and Project Galileo, which protects at-risk groups such as journalists and charities.

What Do Cloudflare Startup Credits Cover?

Usage-based products across Cloudflare's developer platform. Cloudflare groups them into four buckets:

  • Compute: Workers, Workers for Platforms, Durable Objects and Workflows.
  • AI: Workers AI, with a cap by tier.
  • Storage and data: Workers KV, D1, Queues, Vectorize and R2, with R2 capped at $10,000.
  • Delivery: Pages, Images, Stream, Cache Reserve and Argo Smart Routing.

On top of the credits, every tier gets the same free plan upgrades. These include three Enterprise domains, unlimited Pro and Business plans, DDoS and bot protection, a web application firewall with 1,000 custom rules, Page Shield, SSL, CDN and DNS, load balancing with two origins and one rate-limiting rule.

Those security features are often worth more than the credits. A small team rarely spends much on compute in year one, but an Enterprise web firewall is something you'd normally pay a sales contract for.

What Do the Credits Not Cover?

More than the headline suggests. These are the limits that catch founders:

  • R2 cap: storage credits stop at $10,000, even on the $350k tier.
  • Workers AI cap: $2,500 on Tier 3, $10,000 on Tier 2 and $50,000 on Tier 1, according to the FAQ.
  • AI Gateway: Cloudflare says it's temporarily not covered while the team works on access.
  • Domains: registration and renewals through Cloudflare Registrar are never covered.
  • Enterprise add-ons: excluded by default, though you can ask for access by email.
  • Premium network: Magic Transit, Enterprise Spectrum, dedicated IPs and the China Network need a separate contract.

Cloudflare's own page isn't fully consistent here. The main benefits table shows Workers AI "up to $50,000" for everyone, while the FAQ gives smaller caps for Tiers 2 and 3. Plan around the smaller number.

One more line deserves a look before you rely on it. The benefits list mentions a 100% SLA, but the program terms say the startup plan doesn't include a service level agreement, so ask the startup team which one applies to your account.

How Far Do Cloudflare Startup Credits Really Go?

Further than most early startups need. We ran Cloudflare's published prices against the credit caps to see what each one buys.

ProductPublished priceCreditRoughly buys (our math)
Workers requests$0.30 per extra million$10,000About 33 billion requests
R2 storage$0.015 per GB-month$10,000 capAbout 55 TB stored for a full year
Workers AI$0.011 per 1,000 neurons$2,500 (Tier 3)About 227 million neurons
Workers AI$0.011 per 1,000 neurons$50,000 (Tier 1)About 4.5 billion neurons

Prices come from Cloudflare's docs for Workers, R2 and Workers AI. The math ignores CPU time and storage operations, which add to real bills.

Our math: the Workers Paid plan costs $5 a month and includes 10 million requests and 30 million CPU milliseconds. A startup serving a few million requests a month would spend about $60 a year, so $10k of credit mostly sits unused unless you run AI or heavy storage.

That's the point. Workers AI is where credits burn fastest, and it's capped. The free allowance is 10,000 neurons a day, which works out at about 3.65 million a year, so even the $2,500 cap covers about 62 years of the free daily amount.

R2 is the other big win. Cloudflare charges nothing for egress from R2, so a startup serving lots of images, video or model files can save twice: once on storage through credits, and again on the transfer fees other clouds charge.

How Do You Apply to the Cloudflare Startup Program?

Online, in about 15 minutes if your details are ready. Here's the path we'd follow:

  • Step 1, check your tier: confirm whether your investor is an affiliated partner before you start, because that decides between $10k and $100k or more.
  • Step 2, set up the account: create a Cloudflare account with your business email and add a valid payment method, which the terms require.
  • Step 3, prepare proof: have your live website, your LinkedIn, X or GitHub page and your latest funding date ready.
  • Step 4, apply: use the "Apply here" link on the Cloudflare for Startups page and fill in the form.
  • Step 5, wait: review usually takes up to 48 hours, and approval arrives by email.
  • Step 6, note the date: your 12 months start from the confirmation email, so put the end date in your calendar.

If you hear nothing after a week, check spam first. Then write to startups@cloudflare.com with your account ID.

If you're turned down, you're not stuck. Cloudflare says it gives a reason, and you can ask for a fresh review with more information, such as a funding letter or a link to your product.

What Happens When the Credits Run Out?

You graduate, and the card on file starts paying. Cloudflare sends three reminder emails before the end date, so watch the inbox you applied with.

You'll have three options:

  • Self-serve plan: pick a paid plan in the dashboard to keep running without a break.
  • Free plan: any Enterprise domain you haven't moved to a paid plan drops to Free, which removes features like the advanced firewall rules.
  • Enterprise: talk to Cloudflare's sales team before you graduate if you need to keep Enterprise features.

The billing rule matters most. The terms say overages are billed automatically, and once credits expire, your card is charged unless you have a prepaid contract.

So budget for month 13 in month 9. A short checklist helps:

  • Alerts: set usage notifications in the dashboard for Workers, R2 and Workers AI.
  • AI spend: check which Workers AI models you call most, and swap in smaller ones where quality holds.
  • Stray jobs: make sure nobody left a test job, cron trigger or queue consumer running.

Cloudflare Startup Program vs AWS and Google Credits

Cloudflare's top tier is large, but the big clouds offer more for some startups. Here's how the headline numbers compare, each from the provider's own page.

ProgramEntry offerTop offerHow long
Cloudflare for Startups$10k for bootstrapped teamsUp to $350k with an affiliated partnerOne year
AWS Activate$1,000, up to $5,000 for someUp to $200,000 with an Activate ProviderUsually one to two years
Google for Startups CloudVaries by stageUp to $200,000, or $350,000 for AI startupsCheck Google's terms

AWS figures come from its Activate credits guide, dated June 3, 2026, which also says AI startups can ask about credits above $200,000. Google's come from its startup program FAQ.

The best deal for a bootstrapped team is Cloudflare's. A $10k entry tier with no investor beats the $1,000 AWS gives self-funded founders by a wide margin.

These are separate vendors, so you can apply to more than one. Many teams run their front end, storage and edge logic on Cloudflare and keep heavy GPU work or a managed database on a big cloud.

Pick by workload, not by the biggest number. If your product is mostly web traffic, file delivery and light AI calls, the Cloudflare startup program will cover a year of real use. If you train models or run large GPU jobs, a big cloud's AI tier will matter more, and Cloudflare can still sit in front as your CDN and firewall.

What Mistakes Waste Cloudflare Startup Credits?

Most waste comes from timing, not from spending. We see the same five mistakes:

  • Applying too early: the clock starts at approval, so don't join a month before you write code.
  • Ignoring the caps: a $350k approval doesn't mean $350k of Workers AI, because AI tops out at $50,000.
  • Forgetting the card: a valid card is on file from day one, and it gets charged once credits end.
  • Using the wrong email: a Gmail address gets rejected, and only one application per startup counts.
  • Leaving jobs running: cron triggers, queue consumers and AI test scripts keep billing after the team forgets them.

One last trap is assuming credits transfer. They don't, so a startup that changes its Cloudflare account mid-year can lose what's left.

Can Existing Members Move to the Higher Limits?

Sometimes. Cloudflare says members who joined under the old $5,000 and $250,000 limits can ask for a review.

Send your account ID and a short usage summary to startups@cloudflare.com. Upgrades are case by case, they aren't automatic and an approved upgrade doesn't extend your 12 months.

Is the Cloudflare Startup Program Worth It?

Yes, for almost any tech startup that already uses Cloudflare or plans to. The Cloudflare startup program is free to apply for, review is fast and even Tier 3 brings Enterprise security that small teams can't usually buy.

It's worth less if your product depends on things the credits skip. Heavy AI Gateway use, large GPU workloads or a product that needs a contracted SLA all fall outside the program, at least for now.

Two notes before you sign up. Cloudflare can use your company name and logo in its marketing, and the program can change or end at any time, so read the terms on the day you apply rather than trusting any guide, including this one.

Our short version: apply as soon as you have a product people can use, not before. Get the tier right, mark the end date and treat the Cloudflare startup program as a year to learn your real costs, not as free hosting forever.

How Van Data Team Helps Startups Build on Cloudflare

We help startups build data and AI systems that keep costs in check after the free credits end, whether they come from the Cloudflare startup program or a big cloud. That means picking the right mix of edge and cloud, setting budget alerts on day one and planning for month 13 before it arrives.

If you're comparing options, our guide to Claude for Startups covers another credit program for AI builders. Our breakdown of Cloudflare's AI agent runtime explains how Workers isolates and containers fit together, and our cloud cost guardrails piece shows how to stop a bill from creeping up once credits run out.
